The waterfall associated with rich past. In the early 20th century foreign investors wanted to harness the power of Gullfoss to produce electricity. At that time the waterfall to a farmer named Tómas Tómasson. Englishman named Howells to intend to buy Gullfoss. Tómas Tómasson denied his proposal. But he leased it to him.
When the rental contract legally bound the farmer´s daughter, Sigriður Tómasdóttir using her own saving hired a lawyer in Reykjavik to defend her case. The trial lasted years. She even threatened to throw herself into the waterfall if the construction would begin. The struggles of Sigriður to preserve the waterfall made the people called her as Iceland´s first environmentalist.
